For their second single release leading up to a collaborative new EP, Mike Love and Rising Tide have teamed up with reggae legend Clinton Fearon to create a wonderful new track titled Medicine Man. With their combined musical talent in full flex, these skilled musicians were able to combine horns, harmonies, complex chord structures, and inventive arrangements in a way that still allows the song to vibe as if it was simpler and more minimal. Such a feat is no easy task, but for these three artists it seems to have been done with ease.

Rising Tide, composed of the core members from the band Groundation, are known for their mix of roots reggae, jazz, and rhythm and blues, all of which are on full display in Medicine Man. The track begins with a syncopated, jam band style drum pattern backing a roots reggae style rhythm section. Over this are tasteful horn lines and layered harmonies that work beautifully with Mike Love's singing. As the song progresses, we are introduced to Jamaican legend Clinton Fearon's iconic voice. In the second verse, Love and Fearon begin lyrical callbacks, while a series of keyboard selections fill the sonic space in between. For the final minutes of the Medicine Man an instrumental jam erupts that sounds like it belongs somewhere between Grateful Dead, The Wailers, and Pink Floyd sets, and had us jamming for sure.

In our interview with Mike Love last year for his Daily Reggae Artist Profile, Mike had mentioned how excited he was for his upcoming collaboration with Rising Tide. One of the things he was most stoked about was how the songs they were creating involved complex chord structures and instrumentation, which he found creatively inspiring and all-around good fun. While we knew tracks resulting from this collaboration were going to be great, we are still surprised by how fantastic they are and can't wait to hear the full EP upon its release! We were also excited to see that Clinton Fearon was a part of this track! His voice and style melded perfectly with the sound that Rising Tide and Mike Love have developed. Clinton's catalog of stellar music is prolific, and we recently had the chance to sit down and talk with him about his career and music. Be on the lookout for his Daily Reggae Artist Profile and awesome new music set to release soon!
