Live music is back in a major way, and if you’re looking for an epic time this weekend look no further than San Diego Bayfest. This year’s Bayfest, which will be held at San Diego’s Waterfront Park features an incredible reggae lineup including Dirty Heads, Sublime With Rome, Fortunate Youth, The Aggrolites, KBong, and DENM. Dailyreggae.com caught up with Mikey Beltran aka Mikey Beats, one of the festival’s three organizers, to hear about Bayfest’s inspiration, what attendees can expect, and San Diego’s rising role as the United States’ premiere reggae music destination.

Great to connect with you Mikey! Tell us about San Diego Bayfest and your role in organizing this epic reggae festival!

I am one of three partners at San Diego Bayfest. My partners are Dominic Coleman, who is the owner and operator of Single Fin Surf Grill in Mission Beach and Joe Rinaldi is the GM of Music Box. Dom handles pretty much everything regarding festival operations and Joe handles the bookings. I hang out with the bands and attendees and throw spitballs at team meetings, haha!

That’s so awesome to hear about how the three of you teamed up! Are any VIP and GA tickets still available for purchase?

Dom, Joe, and I all worked on San Diego’s Oysterfest for years. 2017 was their last year here and it was a sad ending to a great festival. In 2018 I went to BeerX at Waterfront Park to see Slightly Stoopid, Stick Figure, and Pepper. I remember looking out to the crowd from the stage and told myself, “I can do this,” so I did it. Bayfest in 2019 was at the Embarcadero with Stoopid, Tribal Seeds, Fortunate Youth, Don Carlos, and HIRIE. Pretty epic for our first festival in the driver’s seat. During the pandemic, I scored us a reservation at Waterfront Park and here we are. It’s crazy to think that this all came about from just a dream at BeerX.

We still have some GA and VIP left, but this show is going to sell out. Fans, get ready because we will blow your mind! Be ready for the best San Diego has to offer is music, food/drink, and of course, excellent weather! If you want a preview of what will happen next weekend, just look at the Dirty Heads performance at Red Rocks last weekend. If you watch that and don’t cry tears of joy at everyone finally being out of their house and at a concert together, then you may be a serial killer, haha!

San Diego is one of if not the United States’ most vibrant reggae music cities. How amped are you for Saturday!

Seriously though, I am born and raised in San Diego. I have been in the San Diego music scene for 26 years. I grew up on the same block as my Dad and my daughter is named after that street. I have given everything to San Diego and this city always gives back to me tenfold. Saturday, July 10th will be the day we can finally be together again and show everyone why we are America’s finest city.
