Few figures in reggae are as iconic—or as enigmatic—as Lee “Scratch” Perry.
A visionary producer, dub pioneer, and sonic provocateur, Perry transformed the sound of Jamaican music and influenced genres far beyond it.
Now, Shanachie Entertainment honors Perry’s legendary work with a new vinyl release: Crucial Cuts from the Heart of the Ark (1973–1978), a handpicked collection from his seminal Black Ark Studio era.
The album includes cornerstone tracks like Max Romeo’s “War Ina Babylon” and Junior Murvin’s “Police and Thieves”, as well as deep rarities like “Fisherman Dub” and Carlton & the Shoes’ “Better Days.”
We spoke with Randall Grass, General Manager of Shanachie Records and the project’s curator, to dig into the inspiration behind the release—and Perry’s lasting legacy.
Capturing the Black Ark Sound
“When I was first listening to reggae in the Seventies, Lee Perry’s productions stood out for their originality and their atmospheric sound. One of the first Jamaican singles I ever bought was ‘Kaya’ by Bob Marley & the Wailers on his Blackheart label.”
“In 1981, shortly after joining Shanachie Records, I met Lee at the New York City apartment where he was staying after closing his Black Ark Studio in Jamaica; it was during his ‘crazy’ period where he was writing sayings on everything—shoes, walls, his hands—and a mystical conversation followed.”
“I selected tracks for this compilation album to capture the essence of the Black Ark sound—mixing both legendary classics and great obscure tracks people don’t really know.”
The Sound That Changed Everything
While Perry’s influence might not be prominent in today’s Jamaican reggae scene, his production innovations continue to ripple through global music.
“The current reggae scene in Jamaica does not reflect his influence much but around the world reggae artists and musicians in other genres continue to utilize innovations he created—whether in Dub techniques that have impacted Hip-Hop and Dance Music as well as Roots Reggae—or simply the inspiration as fans and musicians continue to play the music he created.”
A Fearless Innovator
“Lee was innovative first and foremost because his creativity knew no bounds; he would try things people would think were impossible or crazy and more often than not they worked!”

“Sonically he used bare-bones technology to create soundscapes, not merely musical backing—phrasing, Wah-Wah, delay or echo, sound effects such as animal noises, virtually anything that would enhance his musical vision.”
“In addition, he was very much a student of American R&B and incorporated elements of R&B and Funk with Jamaican music in unique ways; The Wailers album Soul Revolution is a great example of that.”
Legacy in the Vinyl
Built in 1973, Black Ark Studio was Perry’s personal laboratory—an unpolished space where spiritual energy, analog experimentation, and raw creativity collided. Despite its limited gear, Perry crafted some of reggae’s most iconic records, many of which appear on this new release.
With Crucial Cuts from the Heart of the Ark, Shanachie offers a rare and powerful listening experience—one that invites new ears and longtime fans alike into the warped brilliance of Perry’s most influential era.
