Kenya Eugene teaches us to be present in love with new music

Daily Reggae connected with Kenya Eugene to hear about the singer-songwriter’s new music and creative process. The artist recently released an amazing new EP titled, “You Are I”.

Kenya - we are loving your new single, “In and Outta Love”. What do you want fans to feel when they hear the song?

Thank you so much. That means a lot. “In and Outta Love” is really about the emotional honesty that lives in those in-between spaces—when love is shifting, or fading, or finding its way back.

I want people to feel seen, like the song is holding a mirror to something they may not have had words for. Whether you’re healing or remembering, I hope it brings comfort and connection.

It’s very exciting that the single is your first drop ahead of a new EP, “You Are I”. Can you tell us about your songwriting process for the EP—has it evolved for you as an artist?

Absolutely. With You Are I, the writing came from quiet moments of reflection, and from living life fully—being present in love, in motherhood, in questioning, in faith. I’ve always written from the heart, but this time I allowed the songs to unfold at their own pace. I didn’t try to force the process—I listened more deeply to what each moment was teaching me, and let the music rise from there. That’s where the growth happened.

That’s amazing you teamed up with Zion I Kings on the production of your new music. What stood out about their process that you enjoyed while creating your music?

Working with Zion I Kings was truly a blessing. Their sound is deep, spiritual, and rooted—and that aligned perfectly with the message I wanted to carry. What I appreciated most is that they didn’t try to shape me into anything. They listened, they felt, and then they built a foundation that gave the songs power without losing their essence. It was a true collaboration of energy and purpose.

Why was bringing forward your Roots Reggae sound so important and what are some songs that you’re excited for fans to vibe with?

Roots Reggae is in my bones. It’s in my upbringing, my culture, and my spirit. This project felt like a homecoming—like stepping fully into who I’ve always been musically. I wanted this EP to honor that tradition while still bringing my own voice and stories to the table. I’m especially excited for fans to hear “Lift Up My Head,” which speaks to faith and resilience, and the title track “You Are I,” I’m especially excited for fans to hear the title track, You Are I—a song that rises from the sacred well of womanhood. It speaks to the quiet strength of femininity, the beauty of self-worth, and the divine presence we carry as women walking in truth.”

Do you have plans to perform some more live shows to connect with fans in-person?

Definitely. Performing live is where the music truly lives—it’s where I get to share energy directly with the people. There’s something sacred about that exchange. I’m looking forward to bringing this EP to stages near and far, from the islands to the mainland, and beyond. I can’t wait to connect with listeners face-to-face, heart-to-heart.
